Text based metadata? Have beautiful visualisation with zero effort.

Plenty of business intelligence teams maintain text based metadata. To write something is easy to start with and you gain results quickly. Speed bumps occurs with increasing metadata complexity and thus lineage becoming really intertwined. It is like if someone gives you a textual description how to drive from New York to Philli. Wouldn’t you be like -- “Hey, buddy, gimme a map instead!”?

At SQLdep we’ll give you that map. We transform text based metadata into neat and clear visualisations. By using a simple notation you can import source to target dependencies. Our primary focus is on reverse engineering SQL queries and generating lineage automatically. However we have figured this is a cool extension, so feel free to try it.

How does it works?

1. Sign-up or login into your account

2. Choose the option Upload new code / Paste code on dashboard

3. Name your batch, select SQL Server dialect and paste your code:

If you need to trace data lineage between tables in different schemas just include schema information as well. For tracking lineage across databases expand this further by database name.

sqldep-dataflow: [STAGE].[APPLICATIONS].[APP_ID], [DIM].[ACCOUNTS].[ACC_ID];

sqldep-dataflow: [STAGE].[APPLICATIONS].[APP_PROD_DESC], [DIM].[ACCOUNTS].[ACC_PROD_DESC];

sqldep-dataflow: [STAGE].[APPLICATIONS].[APP_LOAN_NOMINAL_BAL], [DIM].[ACCOUNTS].[ACC_LOAN_NOMINAL_BAL];

sqldep-dataflow: [STAGE].[APPLICATIONS].[APP_OPEN_DATE], [DIM].[ACCOUNTS].[ACC_OPEN_DATE];

sqldep-dataflow: [INTERFACE].[APPLICATIONS].[APP_ID], [DIM].[ACCOUNT_HISTORY].[ACC_ID];

sqldep-dataflow: [DIM].[ACCOUNTS].[APP_PROD_DESC], [DIM].[ACCOUNT_HISTORY].[ACCH_PROD_DESC];

sqldep-dataflow: [DIM].[ACCOUNTS].[APP_OPEN_DATE], [DIM].[ACCOUNT_HISTORY].[ACCH_OPEN_DATE];

 4. Than press Submit and after a few seconds voilá! You can get really complex lineage visualized.

Now it is a best time for you to steer development of this notation in the right direction.
